Concinnity. A skillful and harmonious adaptation or fitting together of parts, an elegant synthesis. A lime green canvas sneaker in a bed of ripe red strawberries…what could be more absurd? What could be more incongruous? And yet there is such an evident sense of harmony here that any incongruity in the subject matter is immediately swept away. Absurdity gives way to delight. This image is a model of concinnity.
Isn’t that one of the features of art? The ability to meld the incongruous into a harmonious whole? To turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, and the extraordinary into the commonplace? A lime green canvas sneaker in a bed of ripe red strawberries…yes, of course, they belong together. How could it be otherwise?
