Two boys and a ball, taking a break, deciding what to do now. It’s a scene played out all over the world. On street curbs, on patio chairs facing well-manicured lawns, on fence rails by hardscrabble dirt farms, on driftwood logs on beaches strewn with tidal detritus, on stones in marketplaces redolent with exotic scents. Two boys and a ball and the entire long stretch of the rest of the day ahead of them. The long stretch of the rest of the day and the rest of their lives, and there’s not much difference when you’re that age, sitting on the curb with a buddy and a ball.
