Archeological research reveals that one of the first artifacts routinely created by early humans were coverings for their bare feet. Shoes very quickly became something more than protective gear. In a very real sense, they became status symbols. Among Roman soldiers, the height of the sandal lacing signified the wearer’s rank; the higher the lacing went up your calf, the higher your status. In ancient Greece, only free men and citizens were allowed to have tongues on their sandals.

The distance between the scraps of raw animal hide our ancestors wore wrapped around their feet and Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahniks really isn’t all that far. It’s a distance easily covered by Mercury’s winged sandals, or by Jack the Giant Killer’s seven league boots, or even wearing Cinderella’s glass slippers.
