Eloquent hands, expressive hands…as able to articulate doubt as certainty, as capable of giving an artful hint as of revealing rage. Hands convey emotion with astonishing grace and delicacy, a subtle shift of the wrist or an arc of a finger can turn an invitation into a summons, can transform warm regret into cold rejection. The border between yes and no is fluid but unambiguous.

The poet Philip Larkin wrote:

Her hands intend no harm: / Her hands devote themselves / To sheltering a flame….

The eloquence of hands can also ignite the flame.
