Contemplation

We will always remember the joyous expressions, the funny faces, the toothless grins and then the new teeth smiles, tentative and awkward. We won’t forget the winning goals, the perfect dive, the well played concerto, the first day of school or the day they go off to college. While it’s nice to have photographs of these moments, we barely need them; we won’t forget. We’re hardwired to remember the big moments, they stick to us like psychic glue.

What we are perhaps more in danger of forgetting are the quiet, contemplative moments – the moments when they’re being them … for them, and not for you. How do they look when they’re playing “he loves me, he loves me not” with a freshly picked daisy? What expressions adorn their faces when they’re drawing a map of the world or listening to their grandfather’s stories? What faraway visions dance across their eyes when you turn out the light and close the door at night? How do they intuitively pose when you ask them to contemplate their favorite dream?
