There are eight million stories in the Naked City; this is one of them. That was the tag line for a 1948 movie and a subsequent ground-breaking television series. Those of us who love the city…any city…often try to humanize it by emphasizing the people who live there. Every week for 138 weeks The Naked City told the story of one fairly ordinary person whose life got a little sideways, a story that could be easily overlooked in the hurly burly of city life.

But anybody who has ever lived in a great city also knows the city has its own story. It’s a big story, a slower story, unfolding over decades or centuries. The individual lives of the people who move through the story of the city are of little consequence. People come and go, businesses open and close, buildings are constructed and knocked down and constructed again. The skyline adjusts; the city continues to grow or decline. The story continues.

There are eight million stories in the Naked City. There is one story of the Naked City. This is it.
