Thinking of Other Times
Suppose a camera sits in the town square and records, at some standard interval, the comings and goings of the townspeople. Eventually a documentary exists. Given careful study and analysis, a lot of information could be gleaned from the images one might gather. Patterns and preferences would emerge, social values would become apparent and even relationships between the genders and generations could be, on some level, analyzed.
While most of us do not consider our artistic endeavors documentary in nature, at its root, photography is a matter of capturing what is there. Documenting. Here, composed brilliantly (and most cleverly), captured with the haze of afternoon-high sun intact, under the dappling trees, we have a document. An artful, creative, beautiful one – but a doument nonetheless. This is a gorgeous photograph of a beautiful scene and a document of the generations it represents. Perhaps the man on the bench is thinking of other times, perhaps not. But I certainly am.
