Which of us has not done exactly this- stand small and silent before the majesty and magnitude of nature? In our overfilled lives, errands, obligations and deadlines loom large over us, making travails of trivialities and mountains out of molehills. Days and weeks rush past in a never-ending to-do list until finally we make the time to rise above it all and seek out some perspective on our lives. Climbing to a higher place, we need this check-in with nature every so often to put our lives back into their proper scale and context.
So this then is a real mountain, something greater than the ones we have constructed out of letters, numbers and ticking clocks. Our posture is reverent, our minds reawaken to the true meaning of the word awesome. The air is clear and for once we can see for miles. When we stand instead of running and are silent instead of speaking, suddenly we are able to see the whole panorama instead of merely the close-up. The necessary adjustments begin to take effect and we become at once as great and as small as one person looking out on the entire world.
