Haunted

It was my grandfather who set me straight. “Houses”, he told me, “are not haunted. It’s people who are haunted. Houses are made of brick and wood. People are made of hopes and fears.” But I kept my hand firmly in his as we walked past old lady Dickenson’s house, just to be sure.
I still think he’s right, of course. But I’ve come to learn a few things over the years: notably that brick and wood are porous and the human condition is somewhat gaseous, able to permeate even the largest of spaces. Maybe there are no haunted houses, per se – but I would be willing to bet there are a few so imbued with the haunted spirits of those who lived in them that they retain, if not the ghosts, the atmosphere.
I think this may be one of them.
