Desert Skating

Wordsworth wrote once about the “gentle shock of mild surprise” felt by a lad who suddenly became aware of the enjoyment even his most common and familiar sensory perceptions could provide. Subtle and universal, once someone has become aware of all those lovely sensations that are generally taken for granted, they are never the same.

One academic writer suggested that, “No psychologist can expect to go further than this, no poet to hit on words more apposite and more harmoniously combined so as to make this little mystery of the soul palpable” and while I appreciate the sentiment, I think perhaps there is an exception to the rule. A photograph can capture the “gentle shock of mild surprise” and, as this one shows, allow us to share the moment of awareness. We’re always looking for miracles and sometimes it’s nice to be reminded … well … that we ARE one.
