old man in orange chair

This is what it comes to. A summer day, a fresh-mowed lawn, a straight-backed chair in the sun. And memories.

It wasn’t that long ago he wore a uniform and fought in what he’d hoped would be the last world war. It wasn’t that long ago he was a young man with a flat stomach who could work all day, dance all evening and make love all night. It wasn’t that long ago that the stars were brighter at night, and the sun was more brilliant in the morning, and the sky was more blue in the afternoon. It wasn’t that long ago, it really wasn’t.

Now it’s a struggle to tie the shoes. Now it’s a long-sleeved shirt on a warm day because he still gets a chill. Now it’s thinning hair and a thickening waist. Now it’s decaf coffee and a sugar substitute.

But it’s not so bad. A summer day, a fresh-mowed lawn, a straight-backed chair in the sun. And memories.
