It has been said of the Coca-Cola bottle that it is the most perfectly designed package in the world. It’s an impeccable blend of utility and form; distinctive in appearance, fitting the hand organically.
The idiosyncratic, oddly-shaped bottle was introduced in 1915, a time when shops generally cooled their soft drinks in tubs of ice water. The water. of course, dissolved the glue affixing the labels, the labels fell off, and customers couldn’t always be certain which brand of soft drink they were buying. The new bottle design allowed Coke buyers to select their choice by feel alone, and made it easier to grip the cold, wet bottle.
The fusion of function, form and aesthetics is the soul of good design. It’s also a good working definition of Beauty. And a thing of beauty, as we all know, is a joy forever. The same can be said for this photograph.
