the light
Pull off the comforter, remove the blankets. Tear off the sheets, stuff them in the pillowcases. Take down the photos from the walls. Throw away the curtains. Empty the drawers of the dresser. Purge the room of every indication that she was ever there.
She used to read in bed. Serious-faced, her legs pulled up, half-moon glasses perched perilously on the tip of her nose, curling a lock of hair around her finger. “Just a minute,” she’d say. “Let me finish this chapter, then I’ll be ready to go.”
The chapter is finished. But the pillows still smell like her.
