Cure for the Common Cabin Fever
the life of liza

The first time I looked at this picture I was struck by how beautiful the face it depicts is, and said as much. What I didn’t explain was why.

What’s beautiful about this face is that the brain behind those clear blue-gray eyes first had the idea of smearing black strap molasses onto those selfsame slanted cheekbones and pasting dill seeds on top of the whole sticky brown mess, and then, having had the idea, decided that it was something that “HAD to be done.”

What’s beautiful about this face is the way it reminds you of the aftermath of a bitter school fight in the dirt, or the stern ritual preparation of a warrior, and at the same time contains a well of hidden laughter and absurdity, not seen in the expression but inferred from the fact that the subject has just smeared molasses and dill onto her face for no reason.

What’s beautiful about this face is that it’s fearless, proud—and slightly insane.

The idea was born, and it had to be done. Now, it has to be celebrated.
