This Thing That Grabs A Hold Of Me Again

It’s good to remember how it all began. It’s good to begin again. Here are Mondo’s own words:

Around ’82-’83, my dad bought his first 35mm camera, graduating from the ranks of the 110 plastic pocket shooters. I immediately started taking it everywhere and shooting, all the time envying the photography students with their fancy SLRs (the extra material costs of the Photography Class proved to be a tad too much for my immigrant family).

I shot lots with that camera, not paying attention to make or model and completely ignorant to the technical aspects of photography. A look at surviving snaps shows my embryonic compositional eye. Frustrated by its lack of features, I saved my money and bought a fancy-schmancy Minolta autofocus compact camera in ’85. My old standby was swallowed up by boxes in my parents’ basement and probably remains there to this day.

22 years later, I’m deep into this thing that grabs hold of me again and upon reminiscence, I tried to no avail to figure out what camera I shot with in the days of yore…

Enter Steffie C and her new ebay puchase. “That’s it!”, I exclaim. “That’s my first real camera!” So that’s what it was, an Olympus Trip 35. Thanks, Stefiie! It’s a sunny day, and I’ve got a roll of Superia 200 kicking around.

I think I’m going to try being 17 again. And give the Oly the love it never got the first time.
