hello george

It’s the sheer incongruity of this scene that makes it so pleasurable to look at: something that’s only and always supposed to be comfortably ensconced in one place suddenly appears in another, where no one ever intended for it to be—and we do a delicious double-take.

No, it’s the juxtaposition of opposites that explains the image’s appeal: a source of heat in a wintry landscape; a puddle of melting water in the middle of a swath of snow. Which is winning, warmth or cold? Man or nature? Chutzpah or fate?

Maybe it’s the contrasts in tone and shape: a white box in the middle of a black ink splotch, nine straight black bars across a white page…

Then again, surely it’s the things we want to know about it: “Who the heck put this here?” “Why?” And “Is that cord trailing off to the right actually plugged in??”

Put all of the above together in a package, add that brilliant L-shaped line the eye can’t help but follow back and forth, up and down, and what you’ve got is—well—picture-perfect.
