After the Fire

We light a candle for more than illumination; we light it for the bashful beauty of the burning flame. We are all of us enamored by the primitive flame, drawn to it now as were our distant ancestors, captivated by the way it dances and flares. We know…we know…when we light the match that we will be bewitched.

Our error is to turn away when the flame is put out. We think the beauty is over. In fact, a new beauty begins. A more subtle beauty, one without the ostentation of the flame, sensual, elusive and indistinct. The flame burns bright and then goes out; the smoke lingers.

There is a lesson here. Every day, every moment is filled with inconspicuous beauties. Do not close your eyes when the light goes out.
