green tennis ball
Kim Denise

Find a wall. Paint it the color of a blood orange, a blood orange set in the high desert at 7:45pm on a hot summer evening just as the sun is beginning to fade.

Take a chair, set it in front of that wall. Doesn’t have to be a new chair. An older chair, one that’s had some wear, a few bumps and scrapes from having been moved from Boston to Portland in the back of a rental truck. A purple chair, a chair the color of a Chow’s tongue.

Put a ball on the chair, a tennis ball. A green tennis ball, scuffed up a tad.

Now, take a step back. Maybe three or four steps. Are you smiling? If the answer is ‘yes’ it means you’ve just created art. Be happy with yourself. If the answer is ‘no’ it means you need to start over again at the beginning.

Find a wall.
