The Dance

Dance then wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

Sydney Carter, 1963

Although this song was not written by a Scot and is not ancient, I confess it is the one that comes to my mind when I see photos of highland dancing. The Scots have danced since time immemorial and highland dancing is one of the oldest forms of folk dance still practised. From dances of war and victory to joy, rebellion and celebration, these lively, athletic dances have influenced everything from ballet to line dancing.

Anyone who has ever seen a Highland dance will appreciate this photograph – it illustrates both the lively motion of the dance and the grace inherent in the dancer.
