a glance from the corner

It’s been written that a man’s face says more than his mouth. His face, the argument goes, is a compendium of everything his mouth will ever say. I’ve no idea if that’s true. If it is, then this man must be quietly well-spoken. It’s a good face. Open, unassuming, a bit reserved, confident, intelligent.
He sits there, caught between wariness and patient good humor. It’s almost possible to hear his thoughts. “Must you really take my picture?” he asks, and immediately answers himself: “Of course, you must; it’s who you are. So I’ll sit still…for a moment; that’s who I am.”
It’s probably a mistake to assume the human face is anything more than a platform for expression and recognition. It’s probably a mistake to assume the face is a canvas revealing the inner person. It’s probably a mistake.
But we all make mistakes. And if it’s a mistake, it’s one I’m glad to have made. Because this is a good face.
