first harvest

In our garden we shall plant zucchini, broad-leafed spinach and spicy radishes. We shall nurture them with sweet rain water stored in old oaken pails. We shall sing softly as we water and weed. We shall tickle the hairy-bellied bees to make them pirouette and dance as they pollenate. In our garden we shall plant with hope, cultivate with joy, and harvest with gratitude.

In our garden we shall make arrangements with the rabbits so they might take a share befitting their status. This much, and no more. We shall negotiate with the groundhogs and form a covenant with the chipmunks. We shall welcome the robins and wrens and invite them to dine on as many mites and mealyworms as they wish. In our garden we shall receive and shelter all.

In our garden we shall weed in the morning, hoe in the afternoon, and water in the evening. At night we shall remove our clothing and paint ourselves blue and step into the dew-dappled soil. We shall dance naked under the pale moon and under the bright moon and under the new moon. In our garden it will be as it was in Eden.

In our garden all harvests shall be as the first harvest.
