Puppy. When you say it aloud, your mouth naturally forms the beginning of a smile. Puppy. It’s a friendly, cuddly-sounding word. A dimple-making word. A word that borders on a grin. A big, goofy grin.

A puppy, it’s been said, is just a small dog, plus high spirits and minus common sense. Everything is new to a puppy. Everything must be explored, everything must be sniffed, everything must be licked. Everything must be licked several times over. And then maybe peed on.

The enthusiasm and unalloyed joy with which puppies do everything is totally infectious. It’s also totally exhausting. The only thing as wonderful as a puppy at play is a puppy asleep. We are thankful both for the purity of their delight and for their capacity for deep slumber. They are charming in every sense of the term…and I think it was very clever of us to give them such a perfect name.

Puppy!
