natura morta al bar

The meal is over. The gelato is gone, the coffee has been finished. The conversation slows, reflecting the awareness that it’s time to return to the rest of your life.

The day…the week, the month, the entire fruitful year…is dotted with such hushed, restrained moments. The moments that serve to cushion the transition between what you want to do and what you must do. You feel a tidal drag pulling you slowly but relentless away. Though you smile and laugh and try to hold up your end of the conversation, part of you has begun to withdraw; part of you, in fact, is already gone.

It’s a bittersweet passage, moving from the table to the mundane world. We focus overmuch on the bitter and neglect the sweet. There is, there truly is, a tender beauty to that transition. It acknowledges that the time you’ve just spent has been meaningful. The things you’re about to go off to do are done in part to allow you to spend the time you’ve just spent.
