Every cowboy, no matter what his height is, stands at least six feet tall. Every cowboy is made up entirely of muscle and bone; he has no soft internal organs; he has gristle for guts. Every cowboy’s hat, regardless of size, holds exactly ten gallons. No cowboy will ever, under any circumstance, wear sandals or use an umbrella. A cowboy always remains faithful to his horse, and his horse holds faith with him. And a cowboy, no matter whether he is chasing something or he’s the one being chased, will never quit. Never.
These are facts. They may not be true, they may not be accurate, they may not be correct…but they are, nevertheless, unassailable facts. We all know facts about cowboys just as we all know facts about Vikings and samurai. These are iconic figures who stand too tall to be affected by mere reality. These figures shed reality like a duck sheds water.
Here is one final fact. A cowboy cannot be defeated. He may lose a contest, he may be unsuccessful in some endeavor, he may fall short of a goal…but he is never defeated. He always gets back up. He always shakes some of the dust off his clothes (but only some of it, because he’s not vain and because he knows eventually he’ll get knocked down again). He pulls his hat low over his eyes and he goes on about his cowboy business. That’s also how a cowboy celebrates victory.
