Sometimes you just have to announce yourself. I’m here, damn it, and you’re going to have to deal with me. It’s not necessarily a matter of pride, nor a matter of wanting attention, nor a matter of seeking recognition, nor a matter of marking territory, nor a matter of giving meaning to your life. Sometimes it’s just a desire to make a big noise.
Walt Whitman, in his Song of Myself wrote: “I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, / I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world.” What we have here may not resound over the roofs of the world, nor even over the roofs of West Belfast. What we have here may be more impertinent than barbaric. What we have here may not last, but it’s a grand little yawp all the same.
It doesn’t matter if this gets painted over. What matters is that it was done at all. What matters is the yawp was given voice.
