The harvest is nearly finished. The grain is being gleaned, separated from the chaff. Soon the herds will be gathered from the farther fields. Some of the stock will be slaughtered against the coming winter. It has been this way for more centuries than anybody can count, and will always be so.
At the end of the harvest, when all the work is done, we will come together in the twilight and build two bonfires. When they are ablaze, each household will extinguish the fire in its hearth. We will leave our homes empty and cold.. We will drive the herds between the two great fires, and follow through ourselves. Afterwards, purified by fire, we will eat and drink, we will make mad love and be thankful. Each family will take a burning brand from the dying bonfire, and with that communal flame will rekindle the fire in their hearths. It has been this way for more centuries than anybody can count, and will always be so.
Winter will come, biting and bitter. Some of us will not see Spring. But on that night we will be well-fed and warm, we will be sated and satisfied, and the following days will take care of themselves. It has been this way for more centuries than anybody can count. It will, we hope, always be so.
