behind the scenes II

There are so many small ways, good and bad, in which to rearrange the atoms of the world. Drop a crushed soda cup on the street; throw a ball across a field; hug the air out of someone’s lungs. Every state is subject to transformation, every object subject to change.

Most of the time these small reorganizations of matter escape our notice, or go unremembered. Sometimes, though, someone is watching—and we end up with a glorious picture of a photographer, locked in concentration, kneeling on some slippery rocks in order to carefully place a yellow leaf behind a branch. A small shock of recognition accompanies the sight of both pictures in tandem: it’s like catching a secret glimpse into a little-seen reality.

Every state is subject to transformation, especially states of mind. All it took to change mine today was the realization that everything we see is a beautiful behind-the-scenes shot just like this one.
