If eyes could speak….

You don’t have to love dogs to appreciate the fact that they have wonderfully expressive faces. It’s impossible to look at a dog like this, windblown and stoic, and not wonder what profundities lurk behind its deep, limpid eyes.

You don’t have to believe that animals possess a genuine emotional capacity to be able to see in them perfect reflections of our own human feelings. Whatever is going on within their inner hearts, their outer attitudes visibly reflect hope, eagerness, satisfaction, triumph, despair, loneliness, and grief.

It is not for us to know how closely the sharp pangs and delights animals seem to experience parallel our own. But a dog like this—oh, a dog like this—its face is as complex as any human friend’s.
