there is a light that never goes out
a nameless yeast
2010 – A Space Odyssey
EXT. ANONYMOUS STRUCTURE –
A hominid warily approaches the strange monolith. It is a stone unlike any other he’s ever seen. Light seems to be coming from within the monolith. Cautiously he stretches out his hairy arm, laying the back of his hand against the peculiar stone’s smooth surface.
It’s warm to the touch. The hominid jerks his hand away, cocks his head, and studies the curious thing before him. The warmth did him no harm, so he slowly touches it again. He slides his thorny hand over the glowing surface, then leans forward and gives it a guarded lick. It doesn’t taste like any ordinary stone.
The hominid’s hand accidentally touches a raised patch of the stone’s surface. The patch is easily depressed. The monolith issues a loud, solid Ker-Chunk and a cylinder appears in a hole near the bottom of the stone. The hominid leaps back, shrieking. After several panicked moments, he warily reaches for the cylinder. Cold, cold…and as he touches it an image grows in his primitive brain. Beardless hominids wearing brightly-colored, strangely-patterend skins, holding each other by the hand, faces raised to the sun, yelping in unison.
I’d like to teach the world to sing….
