Beneath every no
lays a passion for yes that had never been broken.
Wallace Stevens
Winter is a gentle but resolute ‘no.’ No, plants and trees may not grow; they must rest and be patient for the coming of Spring. No, bears may not wander and chipmunks may not scurry; they must rest and be patient. No, snakes may not slither and bats may not hawk for insects; even the insects must be patient. And no, you fragile humans, you may not go naked and barefooted. No, so very sorry, but no.
A red umbrella is ‘yes.’ A most definite, expressive yes. A passionate yes against every possible no. It’s not a denial of no; simply an insistence that no must be challenged.
Wallace Stevens had it right. ‘No’ may prosper for a season, but the passion for ‘yes’ is never completely broken.
