The train is the most percussive mode of transportation. A moving train is an authentic instrument and it shapes our thoughts. There are thoughts that can be thought nowhere else but on a train. Train thoughts have a different rhythm than car thoughts; they use a different sort of punctuation than subway thoughts and rely on a different musical scale than those thoughts we think on aircraft. The thoughts we have on trains are more lyrical than those we have on the bus.
Train thoughts have a measured cadence, a meter dictated by the train itself and the tracks on which it runs. It imposes itself not just on the mind, but also on the body. Our pulse adjusts and we discover our thoughts repeating in metronomic bursts. The train speeds up, the train slows down, and our thoughts resound in time.
On trains we look out the window and our thoughts fall into chorus and verse.
