Day 23

Small satisfactions at the end of the day. Sliding off the shoes. A glass of shiraz on the sofa. The low volume of an intelligent and amusing show on television. The smell of soup heating on the stove. Knowing the alarm won’t need to be set for the morning.
The pyrotechnics of major celebrations may be more memorable, but a good life is measured by the slow accrual of these pocket-sized pleasures. A good life accretes gradually, like a coral reef. An agreeable half hour here, an affable afternoon there, a cozy evening alone or shared with a loved one…an evening in which nothing particularly noteworthy is said, but which casts a contented glow whose shadow stretches over the next few days.
The glorious, bright glitter of fireworks will catch the eye and keep us fascinated for an hour, and leave a sharp and flashy memory. But it’s the snug intimacy of lamplight and a glass of good wine that keeps a life warm.
