Mary Jane 2040

Posse

I adore these three children. I’ve never met them, of course; I only know them through the photographs taken by their charming and very patient mother…and periodic photographs is hardly a sound basis for claiming to know anybody.

And yet I feel like I do know them, even if only in a very limited way. I cherish their eccentric and idiosyncratic fashion decisions. I admire their barely concealed impatience at being photographed as much as I esteem their open display of elation at being photographed. I am absolutely smitten by the way they balance youthful ferocity with vulnerability, by their swagger and their hesitation, and most of all by their unconscious and unthinking beauty.

I cherish these three children for their infinite variability. Sometimes they’re pirates, sometimes princesses, sometimes sweethearts, sometimes con-men, sometimes perfect angels and sometimes wonderfully and most engagingly feral…and they seem perfectly adapted to each role. Most of all, I relish the fact that their mother, in her wisdom, respects and loves them enough to present them as individuals.

I’m not sure it matters that I’ve never met Lol and Grace and Alice. I’m not sure it matters that my impression of them might be altogether wrong. I think the only thing that really matters is this: through some osmotic internet process I’ve come to adore these three children.
