Let us all agree on this: kites are beautiful. Let us also agree on this: kites are at their most beautiful when flying. Finally, let us agree on this: all kites eventually return to earth. Beauty never lasts.

Here is a true thing: a kite is only able to stay aloft because it’s tethered to the ground. It is the tension between the kite and kite flyer…between the sky and the earth…that allows the kite to soar. If the string linking kite to kite flyer should be severed or released, the tension vanishes. The kite may momentarily rise on the wind, but it will soon tumble back to ground. Nothing ascends forever.

We have much in common with kites. Inevitably our string will be released.; our time in the sky is never quite enough. But let us all agree on this true thing: we are all beautiful while we’re up there.
