If this were a postcard (and don’t you think it could be one?) it would be sold at a tiny shop in a seaside town, a shop owned by a woman with long, curly hair who decided, after years of working in offices, that what she really wanted to do was open a store and sell antiques and postcards and strange little books and even stranger blends of tea. And maybe you’d wander in some day, not exactly lost, but not entirely certain of where you were heading either, and decide, after browsing the strange little books and stranger teas, that what you needed were some postcards. You’d pick up a couple of standard seascapes and prepare to pay for them when this one catches your eye (how could it not?) and you put the seascapes back and buy this instead. The shopkeeper might smile at you while you pay for the card and ask where you’re headed while you smile back and shrug and say “Oh, somewhere.” And then, when you return to your car you write Have this much fun on the back of the card and stick it to the dashboard as a reminder that mermaids exist somewhere, draped with pearls and shells, even in crowds, even in the summer sun, and they sure know how to party.
