Verano #1

It’s summer and all the pretty girls are out on the street; they smell like coconut butter and everywhere is the sound of flip-flops and sandals. They hum to themselves as they walk and the heat radiates off the sidewalks and the coconut-scented girls clatter quickly along, even though they’re going nowhere in particular.

They go in and out of shops, the summer girls, and buy the things pretty girls buy. Brightly-colored clips to hold their hair, and magazines with photographs of other be-sandled pretty girls, and lip balm with aloe, and sunglasses they’ll wear twice before losing. It’s summer and they’re in a coconut butter hurry; lost sunglasses are a small price to pay.

The street is silent after the pretty girls have gone, but the shape of the sound of clattering sandals is still fitted in the ear, and the ghost of coconut butter hovers around a lost pair of sunglasses.
