I’m not a Christian, but I’ve always appreciated the Sermon on the Mount as a fine example of moral teaching…except for one passage. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine.
That shows a profound lack of understanding of the worth of dogs, not to mention an over-estimation of the worth of pearls. Dogs are true to themselves, and therefore generally true to you. They may not always conform to human standards of conduct, but unlike humans dogs are usually willing to try. Look at this little fellow. He’s totally absorbed…and yet if you patted your thigh and called to him, he’d cheerfully leap to his feet and abandon whatever has him so fascinated. What could be more pure than that?
Give not that which is holy unto dogs? Nonsense. Give dogs everything they deserve. And go ahead and cast your pearls before swine. No pearl, however rare and beautiful, is worth half as much as the common affection of an ordinary dog.
