Afterwork…that period between the workday’s end and the evening’s start, when everybody’s coming and going, when everybody’s got some place to be and a time to be there and they don’t intend to be late. Work is done and home is calling, the pub is calling, the cheap-ass take-away curry is calling and the only acceptable answer is “Yes, I hear you, yes I’m on my way.”
In summer, the afterwork hours become elastic. The heat makes them stretch. People move a little slower, their heels don’t strike the pavement with the same percussive intensity, their eyes are a little less focused. Their afterwork thoughts drift farther away and are in less of a hurry to return.
Afterwork, and everybody’s going somewhere on the summer streets. Everybody except the photographer. The photographer is already there. The street is calling and the photographer gives the only acceptable answer: “Yes, I hear you, yes I’m here, yes and yes again, and always yes.”
