Earth and sky. That’s all there is out here, earth and sky. And weather. In the city weather is something that happens to you; the radio tells you it’s likely to rain so maybe you take an umbrella or trust your luck. Weather is an inconvenience you have to deal with. Like running out of garlic.

Out here, you have a relationship with weather. You can see weather born, develop, grow and die. You see the rain clouds begin to form on the horizon, you see them take shape and become a storm…or see them break up and dissipate. You see whether the rain is coming your way or whether it’ll pass by. Out here weather means something. It means crops grow or fail. It means houses stand or are blasted to splinters. It means everything.

Out here people pray. They see how small they are. They see how forces beyond their control will shape their lives. They see earth and sky and know they exist on that thin line in between.
