ACME Candy Store

Sugar makes you smart, sugar makes you stupid. Neurons have a pretty selective appetite for energy-producing molecules: glucose is the only food they can use. So sugars are essential for brain function. They’re the only reason bioelectric signals are able to flash like lightning in your grey matter and you’re able to think, learn, or remember.

But when a lot of sugars—particularly simple sugars like the ones in jellybeans, popsicles, chocolate syrup, Peppermint Patties, and butterscotch icecream—flood your body, your pancreas (yes, you do need that one) goes into overdrive. It sends out waves of insulin, which causes your cells to start tugging glucose molecules out of your bloodstream and tucking them away for later use.

Which means a stop in the ACME candy store could actually make your neurons hungrier, and you apt to act…well…a little bit giddy.

Still. It’s totally worth it. Right?
