The human head is an oddity. It is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. Consider that on average the head is about twenty inches in circumference and weighs about 10 pounds…smaller than a bowling ball. And yet confined within that tight space is the entire world. Several worlds. An infinite number of worlds.

In your head–your very own head attached to your very own shoulders–you’re able to hold the Pacific Ocean and the moon and all the streets between your door and local market. In your head you carry a basic understanding of gravitation and the circulatory system and the melodies of more television commercials than you care to think about. In your head is Africa and Europe and South America and Asia. In your head is a pepperoni pizza and the Loch Ness monster and the Beatles (both living and dead) and Sigmund Freud and the amusing shape of Italy.

It’s no wonder we sometimes want to unplug our heads and set them aside for a while. The damned things are a freakish burden. How freakish? The human head also contains…that’s right…a complete human head.
