As the impressionist painters well knew, sometimes the best way to capture the heart of something isn’t the most literal. You don’t have to be able to clearly see eyes, beak, feet, or even feathers, here, in order to clearly see bird, clearly see flight. These soft, rippling diagonal lines, swirling against a background of deep blue, speak more loudly than any detailed study of anatomy. Call it a triumph of art, call it a triumph of the brain’s ability to decode impressions; either way, this photograph achieves the most wonderful party trick: it turns an ineffable ghost of an image into a perfectly crisp idea. And it is beautiful.
