Herbstserie

It’s a little early for Halloween, but then again, this isn’t exactly a typical Halloween photograph, though the basic elements are there: multiple cats swirling at foot-level like a miasma of grey smoke, a ghostly pumpkin that seems ready to birth, at any moment, something unexpected. No, it’s a little too charming to qualify as blood-curdling. The cats, which aren’t quite inky enough to jinx you for seven years, have too much personality in their sidelong suspicious gazes, and someone forgot to carve an evil face on the overly pale pumpkin. I think I’ve figured it out, though: it’s not a photo about the spooky forces that lurk within the fall season. It’s an old-fashioned still-life: elegant, moody, and just a little haunting.
