5 + 5

In military communications, signal quality is measured on two five-point scales: clarity and strength. A signal received at the top of both scales is said to be understood “five by five.” Less formally, the signal is said to be read “loud and clear.”

I don’t know the people in this photograph, but I’m reading their signal five by five. More importantly, it’s obvious they’re reading each other’s signals. Five years dating, five years married. Ten years of history. Ten years of letting it unfold, ten years of making it work, ten years and I’ll bet it’s gone by so quickly they can’t believe it. Ten years of getting along, of talking, of laughing, of sharing. Ten years. Ten.

It’s always about communication, isn’t it. Do you read me?
