Hector’s Cafe

I like being in this part of town where most of the people are doing physical labor. I don’t always like what they are producing. I see the new building, for example, as another nail in the coffin for this historic neighborhood. Regardless, the point is that that some things are being produced. Real goods and products and services result from the labor. In a world where words like “trillions” are used to describe short-term fluctuations in economic indices, seeing actual bricks and mortar, or a hearty breakfast made from scratch, or even an uncut side of beef can be remarkably refreshing.

I went into Hector’s because the sign said they had oxtail for lunch. I ended up getting roast chicken instead because eating oxtail properly is a down-and-dirty operation and I had a lot more to do that day. The chicken was moist and tender and the gossip from the construction workers at the next table provided just the right seasoning.
