because he was a good boy

Here is a true thing about dogs: they are completely incapable of hiding their emotions. Evidence of a dog’s state of mind is always right there. In its face, in its tail, in its entire wiggle-waggling body. There’s never any need to ask yourself “Did I say the wrong thing? Is he offended? Does he like me?” With a dog, you always know exactly where you stand.

The thing is, dogs are optimists. They always believe any good thing is going to last forever. And like all optimists, dogs know disappointment. Every time you leave the house without him, a dog is disappointed. Every time you don’t throw a stick, a dog is disappointed. Every time you stop playing long enough to take a photograph, a dog is disappointed. And lets you know it.

There is no duplicity in a dog. No subtlety of expression. No inscrutability. Despite the amount of artwork devoted to it, dogs would be singularly bad at poker. It’s one of the reasons we love them.
