Mai An Hoa

poser girl

There was a girl, a girl with a frangipani blossom behind one ear, and whenever the sunlight touched her face she would smile.

That’s the story; everything else is just mere detail. The fact that everywhere she went she left behind the scent of frangipani like sweet thoughts, a scent so faint you wondered if you really smelled it at all…detail. That when sunlight touched her face, when it touched her and she smiled, everybody on the street smiled as well and continued to smile even after she’d gone, though they didn’t know why…detail. That she always put her hand on her face where the sunlight touched it, as if to see if she could touch the sunlight like the sunlight touched her…detail. That nobody knew her name or where she was coming from or where she was going, that all they knew of her is she would pause briefly in the street when the sunlight touched her face, then continue on her way…detail.

There was a girl, a charming young girl with eyes sharp and bright and clever as a crow, a girl with a blossom behind one ear, and when the sun slid down into the streets and touched her on the face, she smiled. That’s all we need to know. She smiled.
