Here is a photograph of a secret.
She is a shy creature, the secret; she cannot be approached directly. One must sidle up to her, gently and discretely, on a tangent. By nature, the secret is always ambiguous, imprecise, a shape that blends in, making her difficult to hold and impossible to interpret correctly. A secret never permits herself to be seen clearly.
Much of the attraction of the secret lies in her inherent mystery, in her contradictions. We want to know her, yet we want her to remain mysterious and intriguing. The more she reveals of herself, the less we know her. We ask much of her; she gives us little in return. And yet it seems to be enough. Almost enough. Almost…which is why we’ll never quite be able to leave her.
