Here is a true thing: bicycles are the fountain of youth. Everytime you get on a bike, you become twelve years old. Perhaps it comes from the fact that bicycles, unless they’re in motion, are inherently unstable; and when in motion, they’re vulnerable to collision–which is also a description of being twelve years old.

The age-defying properties of bicycles is most apparent in the people who work on them. The decision, as an adult, to be a bicycle mechanic is never based entirely on logic. It’s a decision grounded in fun. Yes, the business of bicycle repair is first and foremost a business, but the operative term there is bicycle, not repair. The people who work on and with bikes always seem to be cheerful, resilient, eager…maybe just a tad impudent. In other words, young.

Yes, bicycles offer good knee-friendly exercise. Yes, they’re an uncommonly energy efficient mode of transportation. Yes, yes, they’re environmentally sound. But at the heel of the hunt, what matters is this: bicycles make you young.
