A most considerate and affable cat, Sergei. Always on time for breakfast, which we invariably take together informally at the small table beside the east window in the dining-parlour. Over coffee I read to him the morning news, selecting subjects he might find gratifying or of interest. As I read, he quietly listens…or politely pretends to listen…and studies the weather outside. Sergei rarely offers anything quite so strong as an opinion at that hour of the morning.
After coffee and the news, our conversation moves on to those busy nothings of a more domestic hue. He inquires after my schedule, and I after his…though his, it must be said, rarely varies from day to day. A nap follows our breakfast, after which there will be a brief period of furious play with a mouse cleverly crafted out of felt. This leads, regardless of the weather, to a long survey of the various windows of the house. Sergie may pause long enough to chase a spider if one promises a challenge, but will just as likely leave it for the housekeeper. He has such a high regard for her.
Some would call our simple domestic life dull, and so it must seem to those who do not know Sergei. But we are singularly compatible, and when the fires are lighted at the end of the day, we both sit near the hearth and feel ourselves to be the most contented and fortunate of individuals in the whole of this fine and merry world.
